Miranda’s story:
One simple step saved her baby’s life
Still a teenager. Still in school. Unmarried.
Miranda wasn’t ready to be a mom. And she knew it.
“I was in shock,” she says. “How could this happen to me? I had my life ahead of me. How was I going to have a baby? How was I going to explain it to my parents?”
Worse, her boyfriend was pressuring her to have an abortion. Miranda agonized over her predicament.
Taking a chance, Miranda confided in one of her friends, who found a Christian pregnancy medical clinic nearby. Though she still believed abortion was her best option, Miranda agreed to go to the clinic and learn more. During her visit, a counselor sat down with Miranda, and listened as she poured out her story. Then a nurse took a crucial, lifesaving step: she did an ultrasound scan.
That’s when Miranda began to see things differently.
“I could see on the screen that there was this little ‘bean’...a jumping bean. And it was moving around, jumping up and down. Right at that moment, I changed my mind,” she says.
“I saw that this was a true living thing. Not just a clump of cells. There was something actually living and growing and moving inside me already.”
After she came home, Miranda’s mom suggested that she check Focus on the Family’s website to learn more about the life growing within her, about her options as a young pregnant woman and about her responsibility to the precious baby she carried.
Now convinced that she should keep her baby, Miranda started to consider adoption. She knew in her heart that at this time in her life, parenting wasn’t the best choice for her.
Nine months later, Miranda gave birth to a healthy baby girl. And today, Hope lives with a wonderful Christian couple and attends elementary school. Adoptive dad Alex says, “It’s interesting that Hope comes from a situation where death was an option. Because she absolutely personifies life and energy and vitality.”
