"When I took the pregnancy test at home, my first reaction was disbelief, shock. I thought, This can’t be happening.”

That was the beginning of a heart-wrenching odyssey that ended up changing Dixie's life forever.

Her mom brought Dixie to the local pregnancy medical clinic. She hoped to change Dixie’s mind about aborting the baby. But, Dixie says, “My mind was already made up. And nobody was going to change it.”

Until the clinic nurse performed an ultrasound.

After seeing her baby for the first time — and hearing the actual heartbeat — Dixie knew there was no way she could end the pregnancy. She recalls, “You could see the heartbeat going so fast. It was life-changing.”

Still, as Dixie and her mom left the clinic, the pressure to solve her problem was almost overwhelming. She began to have second thoughts.

Dixie actually had an appointment for an abortion the following day. “I remember waking up that morning,” she says. “I told myself, Don’t you dare get out of this bed. Just stay in bed. And I did — all day — crying. I knew I couldn’t go through with it.”

Today, Dixie is the mother of a beautiful little girl named Caselyn. Motherhood has been hard, no question. But knowing that she made the right choice for the right reasons gives Dixie new strength for every day, confidence in the future and the drive to be a good mom for her precious daughter.

Dixie realizes that, if it hadn’t been for that ultrasound, her life would be very different today.

She says, “I wouldn’t be a changed person, my daughter wouldn’t be here and I wouldn’t have found me again.”
